Using the iPod to Navigate and Display Data

The Panorama iPod Organizer allows data to be stored on the iPod using the same outline structure normally used for music. Let’s suppose that I want to find the phone number for Hertz Rent a Car, which I have previously stored under the category Travel. I start by turning on the iPod and using the jog wheel to select Artists. (Click here if you are not familiar with the iPod jog wheel or other iPod buttons.)

I press the center button to see the list of artists. Using the jog wheel I scroll down the list until I have selected Travel. (Any category created with the Panorama iPod Organizer software appears in the iPod's Artist menu.)

Now I press the center button again to see the list of travel related entries. Using the jog wheel I scroll down the list until I have selected Hertz Rent a Car.

I press the center button one more time to see the detail data for Hertz, including their phone numbers.

The iPod can display six lines of information. The database entry for Hertz Rent a Car actually contains nine lines of information. I can use the jog wheel to see the additional lines.

The iPod screen is very narrow. If an entry is wider than the screen (for example 800-654-4173 (billing)) I can select the line, press the center button, then press the play/pause button. The iPod will display the complete text of the item. If the item is still too wide to display on the iPod screen the text will slowly scroll across the screen, allowing you to see all of the text.

Navigating to a Different Data Item. The Panorama iPod Organizer is not limited to names and phone numbers -- you can store and display virtually any kind of information. To illustrate this I will now locate the nutrition information for an avocado. I start by pressing the iPod’s menu button three times to get back to the list of artists, then I use the jog wheel to select Nutrition, which is one of the categories I have set up on my Macintosh using the Panorama iPod Organizer software.

I click on the center button and use the jog wheel to select Avocado.

A final click on the center button displays the nutritional information.

Once again I can use the jog wheel to see the rest of the information. As you can see it is very easy to locate and display information on your iPod.
